July 2015: Inflation in South Sudan (Aguet)

Inflation is an increase in the price of goods and services in the market, or an upward movement in the average level of prices. Inflation in South Sudan have caused a lot of problems such as food insecurity and children drop out from school.

Food insecurity is a major problem caused by inflation in South Sudan. This is because the prices of goods and services rise to the highest extend, where by is not afforded by everybody. Food insecurity is on the rise, with half of South Sudan’s  people are facing food shortage. Some people are living on one meal a day and double number of people are in need of food aid compared with last year. The plummeting value of the South Sudanese pound against dollar has left small traders unable to stock their shops with imported goods, on which the country relies heavily. This has led  to scarcity of goods, and rise of their prices. This results in harsh acute malnutrition from 83,000 to 110,000, and for moderate acute malnutrition from 150,000 to 206,000 for this year. The acute malnutrition has increased highly in Jonglei State and Northern Bhar el Ghazal State. Therefore, inflation have caused inadequate supply of food, which lead to scarcity of goods that results in an increase of it prices.

Inflation in South Sudan have also caused drop out of children from school. This is the fact that parents cannot afford both school’s fees and food at home, because of the higher prices of goods at the market. It has also caused inadequate supply of food at school, particularly boarding schools, so it’s hard for students to stay at school. Teachers are also moving to police and military because the salaries they earn per month (300 ssp) is less to let them  sustains their life at home. They join  military and police for better salaries, which are seen  as more secure, further departure of teachers left a small pool of teachers in a country where there is only trained teacher in school. Therefore, lack of trained teachers and school’s fees have increased rate of students drop out from school.

In conclusion, government should bring peace in the country, and must do something to helps citizen, like building of warehouses for goods storage, and be the one to imported goods from outside, and sell them at affordable prices. Government should need to improve agricultural sectors for local production, and must take control of goods’ prices at the market.
